Forest School

“The best classroom and the richest classroom is roofed only by the sky.” – Margaret McMillan

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to offering a purposeful and empowering Forest School experience that broadens our pupils’ horizons and deepens their connection with nature. Our Forest School program is designed to instill a love for the natural world, nurture curiosity and resilience, and provide a range of lifelong skills. We aim to help children understand how they can be positive contributors to the world around them.

What is Forest School?

“Forest School is an inspirational process that provides all learners with regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees.”
Forest School Association

Forest School enables children to enhance their mental health and well-being while developing key skills such as:

  • Confidence & resilience

  • Self-esteem

  • Risk management

  • Teamwork

  • Critical thinking

Our Forest School sessions are run by Mrs. Bibby, a qualified Forest School practitioner, who ensures every child gets the most out of their outdoor learning experience.

What We Offer

Our curriculum is designed to promote holistic development and foster independence, creativity, and critical thinking in a natural environment. We believe in empowering children to explore, question, and engage with the world around them, building strong foundations in:

  • Emotional well-being

  • Social skills

  • Physical development

As William Wordsworth once said, “Let nature be your teacher.” We believe that nature is the perfect environment to support every child’s individual needs. With a balanced mix of freedom and structure, we encourage children to take risks, solve problems, and develop a sense of responsibility—preparing them for lifelong learning.

Forest School: Fun with Risks and a Little Mess!

Forest School encourages children to embrace fun, take risks, and get a little messy along the way! It’s all part of the learning process.

To make sure your child is comfortable and safe during their Forest School sessions, check out our guide on appropriate clothing and footwear. We want every child to enjoy their outdoor adventures, rain or shine!
